Eintracht Frankfurt want Man United after Europa League qualification

Eintracht Frankfurt board member Axel Hellmann wants last season’s semi-finalists to be drawn against Manchester United in the Europa League group stage.

Bundesliga side Eintracht advanced to the group stage for the second successive season thanks to Thursday’s entertaining 3-0 win at home to Strasbourg.

Eintracht lost the first leg 1-0 but the German outfit rallied to complete a 3-1 aggregate triumph in Frankfurt, where both teams were reduced to 10 men.

Led by Luka Jovic and Sebastien Haller – who have since left for Real Madrid and West Ham – Eintracht reached the semi-finals last season before losing to Chelsea on penalties.

Premier League giants and 2017 Europa League champions United are in pot one for Friday’s draw, while Eintracht are in pot two.

“We saw a drama-filled spectacle today,” Hellmann said. “The atmosphere here is something special and it gives the players a second wind. It’s hard to compare it to the Bundesliga.

“I’d like us to be drawn against Manchester United in the group stage. That would be a dream, just like playing Chelsea last season was.”

An own goal from Strasbourg’s Stefan Mitrovic in the 26th minute levelled the play-off tie on aggregate at Commerzbank-Arena.

Eintracht were dealt a blow on the stroke of half-time when star Ante Rebic was sent off, but the hosts still managed to prevail thanks to Filip Kostic’s stunning free-kick and Danny da Costa after Dimitri Lienard saw red for Strasbourg.

“It’s important for Eintracht Frankfurt to be in the draw,” Eintracht head coach Adi Hutter. “The sense of unity between the fans, the coaching staff and the players is what got us through.

“Filip [Kostic] played brilliantly and showed just how valuable he is. Ante also had a very good game. Daichi [Kamada] deserves praise too.”

Tottenham are ‘unsettled’, admits Pochettino

Mauricio Pochettino has admitted his Tottenham squad are “unsettled” as the future of some key players remains unclear – but all they can do is wait and see what happens in the coming days.

Spurs have collected just four points from their opening three Premier League games, suffering a shock 1-0 loss at home to Newcastle United on Sunday.

Star midfielder Christian Eriksen’s future at the club remains uncertain with the transfer window elsewhere in Europe open until September 2, while Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld are out of contract at the end of the season.

Pochettino said he was dealing with an unsettled squad at Tottenham, who face a huge trip to Arsenal on Sunday for the north London derby.

“The group is still unsettled and we need to find solutions,” he told a news conference.

“We have one week more to wait and see what happens in the last 10 days. Of course I think that this is my sixth season and we have started the season as a more unsettled group that we are working with and that is why we must relax.

“We cannot fix some situations. There is nothing to say about that situation that is going on in the squad. Still we need to wait.

“That is a circumstance after playing in the Champions League on June 1, we knew that this was going to happen, some situations like this.

“But for the club and for us it is difficult to handle. We can only wait is all we can do.”

Klopp wary of Arsenal ‘goal machine’ Aubameyang

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is wary of “goal machine” Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang ahead of facing Arsenal on Saturday.

Klopp and Aubameyang spent two seasons together at Borussia Dortmund, the coach heading to Anfield in 2015 and the forward joining Arsenal in January 2018.

Aubameyang has impressed during his time in the Premier League, scoring 43 goals in 67 games in all competitions for Arsenal.

Klopp knows what his former forward is capable of, talking up Aubameyang ahead of the top-of-the-table clash between the clubs at Anfield.

“Auba has actually no real weaknesses apart from his fashion style. I’m really glad it has worked out well for him, because I really like him,” he told UK newspapers.

“I didn’t think abut the Premier League when I signed him for Dortmund. He played as a winger at Saint-Etienne at that time, we needed a number nine because [Robert] Lewandowski left us. We thought long about it, then he came in and played on the wing and we played with [Ciro] Immobile as well.

“Later on we realised he is a really good central striker, a number nine, as well. It was not immediate like this, he developed incredibly and became a goal machine.”

Klopp, whose team and Arsenal were the only sides to win their opening two Premier League games, praised Aubameyang’s progress as a player.

“I have to say his finishing is incredible. Combine that with the speed and it is really interesting,” he said.

“He plays now on the wing in a 4-2-3-1 which means he has to defend too and he is ready for that. He is a really good player.”

Rumour Has It: PSG reject €100m and three players from Real Madrid for Neymar

Prising Neymar from Paris Saint-Germain is proving difficult.

After Barcelona had an offer turned down by PSG, LaLiga giants Real Madrid are the latest club to be rejected.

With the transfer window set to close on September 2, time is running out to meet PSG’s demands.

Paris Saint-Germain have rejected €100million plus Real Madrid trio Gareth Bale, Keylor Navas and James Rodriguez for Neymar, L’Equipe claims.

After Barcelona’s initial loan bid was turned down by PSG, Madrid tried to jump the queue, but it was not enough to satisfy the Ligue 1 champions.

PSG spent a world-record €222m on Neymar two years ago and it will take a lot more to sign the wantaway star as Barca and Juventus circle.

– Talk of Navas being included in a deal comes as Marca reports the Costa Rica goalkeeper has asked to leave Madrid after being told he will be back-up to Thibaut Courtois.

– Barcelona forward Luis Suarez is open to joining Inter Miami in MLS. Miami – owned by David Beckham – are set to enter the league in 2020 and they are keen to make a big-name signing. Paris Saint-Germain’s Edinson Cavani has been linked, while Mundo Deportivo has now talked up Uruguay team-mate Suarez.

– According to Calciomercato.com and Corriere della Sera, PSG are interested in Paulo Dybala and Juventus team-mate Miralem Pjanic. Dybala has been tipped to leave the Serie A champions, while Pjanic could depart Turin as Juve look to raise funds following the arrivals of Matthijs de Ligt, Aaron Ramsey, Adrien Rabiot and Merih Demiral.

– Atletico Madrid have no doubts that they will sign Rodrigo Moreno from Valencia, says Marca. Rodrigo will arrive once Angel Correa completes his protracted move to AC Milan.

– Roma are in talks with Juve over a move for defender Daniele Rugani, claims Goal. Initially linked to Liverpool’s Dejan Lovren after Kostas Manolas’ switch to Napoli, Roma are now keen to bring in Rugani, who is valued at between €20-25m.

– The Sun reports Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea could wait until January before signing a new contract. The Spanish star has reportedly agreed in principal to extend his deal, which expires next year.

– Inter have accepted an offer from Napoli for former captain and outcast Mauro Icardi, according to Corriere dello Sport. However, Sky Sport Italia and Sportialia insist Icardi is not interested in moving to Napoli as he eyes Juve. With that in mind, Napoli are reportedly pushing to sign free agent Fernando Llorente.

– Barcelona and Chelsea are leading the race to sign 16-year-old Las Palmas midfielder Pedri. That is according to Marca, which says Pedri could be available for €10m (£9m).
